10G Transceiver: SFP LR vs SR

10g optical module is the most sold optical module on the market now. 10g optical modules are available in a wide range of models, of which 10G SR and 10G LR are the two most common. So what is the difference between 10g sr and 10g lr? When picking a 10G optical module how should you correctly select the right model? Today Mvslink will take you to find out sfp LR vs SR.

Transmission Distance

Sfp lr vs sr, first they have different transmission distances. To understand this, you first need to know the meaning of SR and LR. SR means Short Range, which means short distance. And LR means Long Range, meaning long distance, now it is obvious to know their most essential difference. Usually, you can use SR for transmission distances under 300m and choose LR for distances up to 10km.

Wavelength

According to the previous point, we know that SR is used to transmit signals over short distances while LR is used to transmit signals over long distances. Then due to their different transmission distances, their wavelengths are also different. The center wavelength of SR for a short distance is usually 850nm, while the center wavelength of LR for long-distance transmission is usually 1310nm.

Fiber Type

10g SR is usually used with multimode fiber(MMF) and different types of fibers affect the transmission distance. As shown in the table below:

10g SR fiber types

10g LR, on the other hand, is usually used with single-mode fiber (SMF), and the transmission distance is usually 2km-10km.

Application Scenarios

Due to low cost and short transmission distance, 10G SR is especially suitable for application scenarios that require short-distance transmission. such as server rooms, hospitals, schools, and enterprises. 10G LR is suitable for application scenarios that require long-distance transmission of signals. such as data centers, communication base stations, communities, etc. Due to its low power consumption and long transmission distance.

SFP LR vs SR, How to Choose

If you need to transmit a 10g optical module less than 300m distance, you should choose 10g SR and use it with multi-mode fiber. If you need to transmit a distance greater than 10km distance a 10g optical module, you should choose 10g lr, and single-mode fiber with the use.

After reading the above, I believe it should be helpful for you to understand the difference between 10G SR and 10G LR. It’s more clear about how to choose a 10g optical module that suits you better.

Mvslink has been focusing on the optoelectronic field for 12 years, with more than 10 production lines. we can produce many types of 10g optical modules, such as 10g sr, 10g lr, 10g bidi, 10g zr, 10g er, 10g dwdm, and 10g lrm, if you have a need, please contact us directly!
