800G Optical Module: osfp vs qsfp-dd

Share the Post:

Nowadays, 400G optical modules are widely used, but 800G optical module technology has also been slowly used in data centers and other scenarios, becoming indispensable in the field of cloud computing, data centers and other areas of rapid growth in demand. 800G optical module package on the market is mainly OSFP and QSFP-DD, so you know the difference between the two packages? How to correctly select the 800G optical module you need? This article will take you to understand the two encapsulation types of 800G optical modules: osfp vs qsfp-dd.

Packaging Types of 800G Optical Modules

800G QSFP-DD:

DD refers to “Double Density”, the QSFP-DD package adds a row of channels to the 4 channels of QSFP, transforming the original 4 channels into 8. The number of gold fingers on the electrical ports of QSFP-DD is twice that of QSFP28. In addition, this packaging method uses PAM4 technology (4 Pulse Amplitude Modulation), which is sufficient to support rates up to 400Gbps.

800G OSFP:

OSFP package (full name Octal Small Form Factor Pluggable), the “O” stands for “octal”, meaning the use of eight electrical channels to achieve 400G, the size is slightly larger than QSFP-DD, with higher wattage. When considering optical modules for high-speed data transmission, it’s essential to evaluate their bandwidth capabilities and thermal performance. OSFP modules, for instance, are designed as 8-channels to support up to 800G of total throughput, resulting in higher bandwidth density. Furthermore, DD, with its higher wattage optical engine and transceiver, and featuring an integrated heat sink, exhibits slightly better thermal performance, making it a suitable choice for demanding data center environments.

Advantages of different packages of 800G optical modules

800G QSFP-DD:

  • It can be downward compatible with other packages, compatible with QSFP+(Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable Plus)/QSFP28(Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable Plus 28)/QSFP56(Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable 56)/QSFP(Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable) packages. 2.
  • The design of 2×1 stacked integrated cages and connectors enables their use in both single-height and dual-height cage connector systems.
  • With SMT connectors and 1xN cages, the cage design and optical module enclosure is optimized to achieve a thermal capacity of at least 12W per module. The higher thermal capacity reduces the thermal function requirements of the optical modules and thus reduces non-essential costs.
  • In order to meet the needs of different customers, the MSA WG adopted ASIC design in the design of QSFP-DD, which supports multiple interface rates and is backward compatible, thus achieving the purpose of reducing port cost and equipment deployment cost.

800G OSFP:

  • The design of OSFP modules incorporates 8 channels to enable a total throughput of up to 800G, thereby achieving greater bandwidth density.
  • OSFP packages have relatively more channels and higher data rates, which can provide higher performance and support longer transmission distances.
  • OSFP modules can handle higher power consumption and greatly improve efficiency due to their better thermal design.
  • there is an opportunity for OSFPs to support higher rates in the future. the larger size of the OSFP module makes it possible for OSFPs to play a role in future higher-rate optical modules (1.6T or higher).

How to choose 800G optical module for your data center-osfp vs qsfp-dd

After reading the above, you must have a general understanding of the characteristics of the two different encapsulation methods of 800G optical modules, and you should have a primary judgment on how to choose the most appropriate optical module for your network.

But in addition to this, you must also evaluate various factors such as application scenarios, transmission distance, heat dissipation requirements, form factor and so on.

Then 800G QSFP-DD optical modules are suitable for high-speed network environments such as data centers, cloud computing and large-scale networks to meet the needs of high-bandwidth and large-capacity data transmission.

In addition to the application scenarios mentioned in QSFP-DD mentioned above, 800G OSFP modules are also suitable for network environments requiring high bandwidth and large capacity data transmission such as ultra-large-scale networks.
